The Abbey Montserrat is the publishing entity more ancient of the world, since the 1498 until the 21st century Montserrat has been, practically without interruption, an institution —and at a later date a publisher— that has promoted the apparition of many thousands of images, of engravings, of books and different kind of magazines. During the 20th century, the abbot Antoni M. Marcet stimulated the creation of a publisher in the modern sense of word, with several collections of books and with general and academic magazines, reduced still to the religious subjects.
The abbot García Jiménez de Cisneros established an own printing to the monastery, that worked since the 1499 until the 1524. It had a gap of more than two centuries —between the XVII and the XIX centuries — but after this break in the production the things went back to work and in the fifty years increased the publishing activity of the monastery but no only of the Catalan culture, also proliferated the publications in Spanish language, Latin and in the diverse languages of Europe.
At present, the main subjects published by the institution are, history, art, essay, studies of language and literature, religion, music for schools, the hiking and childish and juvenile book. In addition to the edition of books, also publishes of twice-weekly and monthly shape the magazines Serra d'Or, Tretzevents, Piu-Piu, Documents d'Església, Qüestions de Vida Cristiana, Studia Monastica, Randa, Catalan Review and Caplletra.
Nowadays the publishing catalogue is over 3.000 titles.
